Fraud Costs Businesses in UK £400K Each

According to the 2010 U.K. Online Fraud Report, an average of 400,000 pounds was lost by British businesses due to online fraud last year. Losses from online fraud of as much as 1.8 percent of revenues are expected. Merchants are becoming aware and are taking proactive measures such as using Verified by Visa, MasterCard SecureCode, and other authentication systems. Te report finds that card payments are three times as high as other forms, and that “71 percent of British consumers will not shop online due to safety concerns.”

Over 70 percent of British merchants plan to review online orders for signs of fraud from here on out and slightly less than 60 percent said that they will review online orders for signs of fraud. Unfortunately only 5 percent said that they planned to check every online order manually.

Merchants need to become aware of fraud, and the high costs associated with it. Too many merchants are paying too much in extra fees for PCI compliance services while neglecting their own security and
fraud prevention.
